The Wise Learner - That one breath...

“It’s been a while since ...”

I say or think this more often than I would like to. But indeed it’s been a while since I posted my last blog. Not that I haven’t thought about writing or that I didn’t have anything to write about, but with a slight feeling of discomfort I chose not to spend my time on it.

It would be so easy to feel ‘victimised’ by the circumstances of everyday life and their consequences. The days do fly by and the list of things I wanted to get done never seems to end - ticking one thing off and adding another three – and yes, there are moments where I have a tendency to wallow for a bit, telling myself that life has gone barking mad (literally actually, since a lovely puppy called Lexi entered our lives and home). Trying to keep up with work, admin and social media alongside having a family/social life and well-needed breaks is not always an easy task.

And then: how to fit in developing and following new thoughts and dreams, where do they fit into an already busy schedule? Good question. They fit into my quiet moments. And sometimes I need to make a real effort to make these happen. It is not always a half hour of meditation. Sometimes it’s just that one deep breath while waiting in the queue at the till in the supermarket. It’s about being with my breath, whenever I can. There are days when I feel that I haven’t had time for more than one single breath full of awareness. And on one of those days, I cherish that one moment.

Anyone can change anything, no matter what the circumstances. However, the key is in being aware, because you can’t change what you don’t know. All change starts with awareness. Becoming aware of what you are really feeling, of maybe only that one breath a day that puts you right there in that one moment of allowing yourself to be and feel, that’s when it can happen.

So in the day ahead, takes some deep breaths, whenever you can, and really feel how you feel at just that brief moment in time, and allow yourself to be fully aware. You might feel great, or you might not; both are valid feelings and both are okay so try not to put any judgement on yourself. All I suggest is that you are aware of whatever it is for you. Because... if it isn’t what you would like it to be, then that one small moment could be the defining decision making moment in your life that catapults you into creating permanent change.
